Only a small minority have opposed him.<\/p>\n<p>According to Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/jeffrey-sonnenfeld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Sonnenfeld<\/a> of the Yale School of Management, who moderated the panel \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/events.aom.org\/events\/aom-2026\/session\/IH82Ikx1aqhCS_vbJChND\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Framers of 1776 vs. The Nation\u2019s Leadership In 2026; Is the Vision Now Vivid or Blurred?<\/a>\u201d at the 2026 AOM Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, many chief executives participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessroundtable.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Business Roundtable<\/a>, but the organization has not taken a public stand with regard to the Trump administration. Sonnenfeld has coauthored the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Trumps-Ten-Commandments\/Jeffrey-Sonnenfeld\/9781637635568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Trump\u2019s Ten Commandments: Strategic Lessons from the Trump Leadership Toolbox<\/em><\/a> with Steven Tian, also of Yale.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of a popular U.S. motorcycle manufacturer responded to Trump\u2019s tariffs from a purely financial perspective but still drew the president\u2019s ire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could be a more iconic U.S. brand than Harley-Davidson?\u201d Sonnenfeld said. \u201cTrump attacked the CEO of Harley-Davidson, Matt Levatich, in 2018 after the company announced plans to shift some of its motorcycle production overseas to avoid retaliatory EU tariffs\u2014his hand was forced because of reciprocal trade tariffs blocking the sale of bikes, which were 100% made in the U.S., in the EU market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levatich \u201chad to shut down a plant in Kansas City and open one up in Thailand, and Trump was furious\u2014he took it personally,\u201d Sonnenfeld said. Trump \u201ctold people not to buy Harleys. Harley drivers lean a little MAGA and coincidentally Harley workers lean a little bit anti-MAGA, but this CEO is nonpolitical\u2014he just wanted to pilot this company down the center of the road, but he winds up being a target of political vitriol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stock plummets, and he gets fired, so there\u2019s a cautionary tale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sonnenfeld said that unity is the only way for CEOs to get President Trump to back down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to have collective action, but just calling him names from the sidelines doesn\u2019t do it\u2014you can\u2019t fire back verbally the same way he does,\u201d he said. \u201cThat old saying holds true in this case: \u2018Don\u2019t get into the mud pit with a pig and start throwing around the mud because the pig knows it better than you do and enjoys it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenior business executives have realized that they need to take the high road with the president, who sometimes will listen to reason,\u201d Sonnenfeld said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, brings a little gift, it\u2019s not a big extortion payment,\u201d he said. \u201cMichael Dell, or especially Arvind Krishna, the CEO of IBM, and other tech titans will meet with him to discuss American technological dominance, AI, quantum computing, and things like that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not defending the oligarchs like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos and others; these people have dominant control of their companies, but the other people who are salaried hired hands, whether it\u2019s tech titans or retailers or pharma CEOs, when they meet with Trump privately to talk through the issues, they\u2019ve often made some headway,\u201d Sonnenfeld said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, CEOs have come to the conclusion that there\u2019s no need to humiliate him, at least while he\u2019s still president\u2014we\u2019ll have him at the helm for at least another two years.
