{"id":3624,"date":"2025-04-14T19:08:20","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T19:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aomtodayprod.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=3624"},"modified":"2025-07-09T15:24:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T15:24:18","slug":"immigration-debates-rarely-mention-this-important-fact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/immigration-debates-rarely-mention-this-important-fact\/","title":{"rendered":"Immigration Debates Rarely Mention This Important Fact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/daniel-butcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Butcher<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many immigrants\u2014both legal and illegal\u2014are willing to do the kinds of unglamorous, undistinguished, and downright dirty jobs that no one else wants to do, according to Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/dean-shepherd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dean Shepherd<\/a> of the University of Notre Dame. He likens their psychology to that of Dalits, India\u2019s most oppressed and stigmatized people, many of whom are garbage collectors who scavenge through slum trash dumps for items to sell. They\u2019re commonly called \u201cragpickers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some ways, immigrants think like the ragpickers, because they say, \u2018I\u2019m doing this so we can eat tonight, but I\u2019m mainly doing this so my children get educated, so that they can get a good job, so that they can marry well, and so that our family\u2019s future generations are going to move forward,\u201d Shepherd said. \u201cAnd researchers have found that in a lot of immigrant communities, they place a high emphasis on the children\u2019s education\u2014and that\u2019s the reason they\u2019re willing to do dirty jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey come over to a new country, and they work very hard in order for their for their children to have a better education,\u201d he said. \u201cThat&#8217;s why they immigrate in the first place, in order to have a better life for their family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the United States in 2023, foreign-born workers were more likely than native-born workers to be employed in service, natural resources, construction, and maintenance jobs, as well as production, transportation, and material moving occupations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor\u2019s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Foreign-born workers were less likely than native-born workers to be employed in sales, office, management, professional, and related occupations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spoke to ragpickers and other entrepreneurs that live in slums, and we asked them, \u2018What are your personal goals?\u2019 and they almost don\u2019t understand the question, because their goals are all to do with the next generation,\u201d Shepherd said. \u201cThey don\u2019t see much hope for themselves, because when we asked them, \u2018What do you plan on doing after retiring?\u2019 they told us, \u2018What retirement?
