People who can approach job searches with a flexible mindset about their professional identity are better able to bounce back after devastating job losses or even injuries that affect the types of jobs they\u2019re able to do.<\/p>\n

Academy of Management Scholar Dean Shepherd<\/a> of the University of Notre Dame said that if people get fired or laid off, butt heir job is not a critical part of their identity, then they can often recover relatively quickly. But many people\u2019s self-image is intertwined with their career.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can find a job that\u2019s kind of related to that identity, then you\u2019re probably going to be fine, but if it was a strong part of your identity and you\u2019re unable to capture a job that represents that identity, then you can fall a long way,\u201d Shepherd said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the interesting aspect is that when you hit rock bottom, it\u2019s actually quite freeing\u2014it\u2019s like freedom when you hit the bottom, because you say, \u2018It can\u2019t get any worse,\u2019 and suddenly, when you hit the bottom, you actually start to think more freely and can engage in this identity play,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessional musicians and dancers who have an injury and can no longer perform those roles that they\u2019ve been performing their whole life and was a strong part of their identity, and also people who get injured and have become paraplegics or even quadriplegics, after a while, they can actually perform well in a different career, and they look back and say, \u2018The best thing that ever happened to me was getting that injury,\u2019 Shepherd said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t at that time, of course; it was devastating, but it allowed them to go and pursue something else, and that something else became what they felt was actually something better than what they were before.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn some ways, maybe it\u2019s better, or maybe they\u2019re just telling themselves it was better, but either way, that\u2019s a good thing that happened or at least a silver lining,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I suppose that\u2019s the advantage\u2014when we hit rock bottom, then we can start to really pursue something else\u2014we can play with these different identities and find something that may actually lead to an outcome that\u2019s better than what would have happened if we had never lost that original career in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, for some, there\u2019s a sad side to that kind of story.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people engage in chronic dysfunctional behavior and take drugs and remove themselves from society and their own way of thinking after suffering a professional setback or injury,\u201d Shepherd said. \u201cBut if you can engage in this identity play, then you can maybe find a better version of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
