Urging business leaders to consider stakeholders other than shareholders and look at outcomes beyond profits was out of step with the post-World War II era. However, fast-forward 70 years, and there\u2019s been an explosion of interest in\u2014and research on\u2014CSR as it has influenced many organizations\u2019 mission, strategic planning, and investments.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/herman-aguinis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herman Aguinis<\/a> of the George Washington University School of Business, who said that CSR is affected by society\u2019s expectations. Aguinis stressed the need to define it so that the effectiveness of organizations\u2019 CSR initiatives can be measured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the \u201970s and \u201980s, there was a trend toward first asking, \u2018What is CSR, and how do we define it specifically?\u2019\u201d Aguinis said.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, there&#8217;s consensus that CSR is about the three Ps\u2014profit, the planet, and people\u2014and that businesses should take care of those different dimensions affecting all stakeholders, not just profitability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept of CSR has evolved over time as society has evolved\u2014the processes, the measures of success,\u201d he said. \u201cThe concept of CSR has become clearer, but also more complex.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daniel Butcher Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has evolved significantly since 1953 when economist Howard Bowen published Social Responsibilities of the Businessman, in which he wrote that companies should focus on business ethics, contribute positively to their community, and do good things for society, not just make money.
