In the absence of legal reform, often employees trying to get the healthcare services they need feel powerless, but employers can do much more to hold their health insurance and administration vendors accountable.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/jeffrey-pfeffer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Pfeffer of Stanford University<\/a> said that rank-and-file employees who are struggling with denials of doctor-recommended healthcare procedures or labyrinthine administrative tasks should request a meeting with or write to their CEO, CFO, and the head of human resources (HR) and demand that they better manage the organization\u2019s health insurance and TPAs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are vendors, and just as you would manage, vet, and scrutinize a vendor or supplier of any raw material or electricity or software or computing power or whatever your vendors are, you ought to do a better job of overseeing your vendors and making sure that they are delivering what you want them to deliver in a cost-efficient manner,\u201d Pfeffer said. \u201cStop putting up with all of this administrative complexity and overhead and the idea that you have to accept whatever pricing and administrative processes that the insurer or TPA offers and agree to live with denials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI interviewed a health insurance executive for one of my books, and he said, \u2018Healthcare is not like any other service; it\u2019s more complicated,\u2019 but I don\u2019t believe that at all,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can find metrics of the percentage of our employees able to access care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pfeffer urged executives and HR personnel to ask themselves:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Are employees able to access care in a way that\u2019s consistent with our diversity initiatives so that we\u2019re not discriminating?<br \/>\n\u2022 Are employees able to get the care they need?<br \/>\n\u2022 Are they able to access mental-health benefits?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018What&#8217;s the health of your workforce?\u2019 is a key question that\u2019s interrelated with the success of your organization,\u201d Pfeffer said. \u201cThis is not complicated, but we made it complicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about delivering a service in a cost-efficient manner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daniel Butcher In the wake of the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year, frustration with the costs, paperwork, and denial rates of U.S. heath insurers and third-party administrators (TPAs) has boiled over.
