UnitedHealth Group\u2019s CEO Andrew Witty, who was the boss of murdered United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, brushed off critics of the health insurance industry as \u201cvitriolic\u201d and \u201cnot in tune with reality\u201d in a private video to company staff as it was the target of angry recriminations in the wake of Thompson\u2019s death last year.<\/p>\n

Witty said, \u201cWe guard against the pressures that exist for unsafe care or unnecessary care,\u201d claiming that the company puts \u201cpatients, consumers and members first, as we always have done. I have never been more proud of this company and our colleagues and what this company does on behalf of people in need across this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Witty, the target of a U.S. Department of Justice inquiry into alleged insider trading who earned $25 million in 2023, went on to tell United Healthcare employees to \u201ctune out that critical noise that we\u2019re hearing right now\u2026 It does not reflect reality. It is simply a sign of an era in which we live. What we must know is focus on what we know to be true. And what we know to be true is that we need a company like UnitedHealth Group and it needs people like Brian within it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to give you a little bit of advice around the media,\u201d Witty said. \u201cMy strong advice and request to everybody is just don\u2019t engage with the media. If you\u2019re approached, I would recommend not responding and, if necessary, simply refer them to our own media organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve seen a lot of media interest in this situation with a huge amount of misinformation and frankly offensive communication,\u201d he said, adding that the media coverage of people\u2019s grievances against the health insurance industry was \u201caggressive, inappropriate, and disrespectful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Academy of Management Scholar Jeffrey Pfeffer of Stanford University<\/a> wrote in a LinkedIn post that \u201cWitty\u2019s response denies the reality described in the tens of thousands of posts about patients\u2019 and their families\u2019 experience with the U.S. health insurance\/health benefits administration industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn so doing, it shows a remarkable tone deafness not just to the reality of people\u2019s lived experience but also to the extensive research literature documenting the realities and effects of practices such as prior authorization, denial of claims, and the hassles of dealing with health insurance,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWitty\u2019s response is itself a telling example of what\u2019s wrong with the industry\u2014a reluctance to acknowledge any problems even though such problems are manifestly present in both case examples and much systematic research.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnited Health has missed an opportunity to learn about a reality that threatens the very existence of the industry in which it operates.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
