{"id":3845,"date":"2025-07-08T15:57:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aomtodayprod.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=3845"},"modified":"2025-07-08T15:57:40","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:57:40","slug":"diversity-trainees-need-a-mindset-shift-to-learn-and-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/diversity-trainees-need-a-mindset-shift-to-learn-and-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Diversity Trainees Need a Mindset Shift to Learn and Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/daniel-butcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Butcher<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A key to effective diversity training is to inspire a shift in trainees\u2019 mindset so that they\u2019re willing to engage with the material and discuss it with fellow participants, then\u2014crucially\u2014apply what they\u2019ve learned by putting into practice in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/quinetta-roberson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quinetta Roberson<\/a> of Michigan State University said that she and colleagues have thought a lot about what they can do to create a new model for diversity training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked ourselves, \u2018How can we do this in a way that people can actually use it?\u2019 and so we thought about some individual or trainee personas so that participants experience what has happened in organizations and how to address those situations,\u201d Roberson said. \u201cYou have somebody who is apprehensive and is thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t want to go through this; I don\u2019t want to engage because I don\u2019t want anybody yelling at me\u2019\u2014maybe they\u2019re conflict-averse, and they just don&#8217;t want to be part of that sensitive conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt same time, you have trainees who are very zealous, somebody who thinks, \u2018I know everything, and I could basically teach this training myself,\u2019 and their motivation and learning is also stifled because they\u2019re already thinking, \u2018I got this\u2019\u2014they don\u2019t necessarily feel like there\u2019s anything for them to learn,\u201d she said. \u201cSo we wanted to create this diversity-training model that\u2019s applicable to everybody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of whether somebody is resistant or 100% gung-ho, how do you get that person engaged?
