{"id":3854,"date":"2025-07-08T15:57:23","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aomtodayprod.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=3854"},"modified":"2025-07-08T15:57:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:57:23","slug":"fair-weather-diversity-supporters-make-a-u-turn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/fair-weather-diversity-supporters-make-a-u-turn\/","title":{"rendered":"Fair-Weather Diversity Supporters Make a U-Turn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/daniel-butcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Butcher<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it\u2019s in vogue to support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and social, racial, and economic justice, many companies tout their support, but when it comes time to actually putting their money where their mouths are, they don\u2019t follow through, or retreat at the first sign of blowback, according to Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/quinetta-roberson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quinetta Roberson<\/a> of Michigan State University.<\/p>\n<p>She said many DEI programs are superficial, that is, more performance than substance. She cites the example of Pride Month, which is celebrated every June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have companies that \u2018pride-wash\u2019 their diversity efforts; they want to sponsor the pride parades, and they have rainbows in their store displays or inside their offices, and we saw this last year with Target offering a collection of Pride Month-themed products when some people were saying, \u2018It\u2019s too woke,\u2019\u201d Roberson said. \u201cBut, to me, it\u2019s not showing a significant level of investment in or engagement with the cause of LGBTQ+ rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy question would be, \u2018How do the LGBTQ employees at those organizations feel as members of those companies that say they support pride while doing all of these externally facing actions?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cBut internally, if employees don\u2019t feel psychologically safe, happy, or motivated, that\u2019s where the disconnect is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another example came in 2020, when a lot of companies decried racial injustice after the murder of George Floyd. Many pledged financial support to nonprofit organizations working to combat social, racial, and economic injustice.
