{"id":3860,"date":"2025-07-08T15:57:06","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aomtodayprod.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=3860"},"modified":"2025-07-08T15:57:06","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:57:06","slug":"transformational-dei-programs-are-integrated-with-organizations-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/transformational-dei-programs-are-integrated-with-organizations-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Transformational DEI Programs Are Integrated with Organizations\u2019 Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/daniel-butcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Butcher<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A slapdash or insincere approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) won\u2019t achieve leaders\u2019 intended goals, while a strategic, integrated approach is likely to bear fruit over time.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/quinetta-roberson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quinetta Roberson<\/a> of Michigan State University said that it\u2019s a mistake to create an isolated department or silo for DEI that doesn\u2019t influence the organization\u2019s other divisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganizational leaders are talking about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and they\u2019ll say the words, but then when you look at what the implementation looks like, it\u2019s incongruent\u201d Roberson said. \u201cMaybe they\u2019ve gotten rid of their chief diversity officer or any kind of responsibility structure to make sure that it works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have any kind of diversity strategy or metrics to measure progress, but instead, you find this very transactional approach where they say, \u2018We have diversity training,\u2019 or something like that, and it\u2019s not really substantive; there\u2019s the communication about DEI, bit that\u2019s all it is, talk,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s very representative of how DEI is handled at many organizations, while others have a piecemeal approach to DEI, that is, \u2018Let\u2019s put some things in place,\u2019 but there\u2019s no consideration of how it links to the work or how it\u2019s going to improve the organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organizations with a diversity program worth emulating tie in their DEI initiatives to their core strategic plans, business, mission, and codes of conduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the ones that do take a more strategic approach to DEI and don\u2019t have it siloed; they don\u2019t say, \u2018Here\u2019s the work of the organization, and here\u2019s DEI\u2019 and they operate separately but rather something that is more integrated,\u201d Roberson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re leveraging DEI just like they leverage every other thing in order to make the organization faster, stronger, more productive, or better in some way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daniel Butcher A slapdash or insincere approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) won\u2019t achieve leaders\u2019 intended goals, while a strategic, integrated approach is likely to bear fruit over time.
