But for training to be most effective, leaders need to consider pre-training steps for employees and post-training follow-up protocol for managers.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/quinetta-roberson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quinetta Roberson<\/a> of Michigan State University said that typically, the pre-training element isn\u2019t well thought-out or communicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople find out that they\u2019ve got to go to diversity training\u2014they got an email two weeks ago that said, \u2018Your diversity training is going to expire,\u2019 because they do it every two years there,\u201d Roberson said. \u201cThey went through the same training as the new employees, as well as people who\u2019ve been here for 20 years\u2014everybody goes through the same training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there\u2019s no kind of an evaluation or assessment to see what each employee\u2019s starting point is\u2014if they\u2019ve got to go through this diversity training again, what do they need to re-up on? What do they need to make sure to focus on?\u201d she said. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t necessarily have to be a deficiency that they have, but maybe it\u2019s something they want to learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if there\u2019s nothing like that pre-training, it just assumes that all employees have the same starting point, and that\u2019s what many leaders do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lack of pre-training information packets or assessments makes it difficult for trainers, because leaders are assuming that everybody is at the same starting point in terms of knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some people, trainers have to do more remedial work and, for other people, they have to do more advanced instruction, and balancing that is challenging,\u201d Roberson said. \u201cSo assessing employees pre-training is important, because then maybe trainers can actually group people and have different modules tailored to each.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so that\u2019s the customization that pre-training preparation enables,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be different for each individual, but it could be more need-based.
