Diverse board members can\u2019t make a difference if their longer-tenured colleagues routinely disregard their suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/kris-byron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kris Byron<\/a> of Georgia State University said that female board members and those representing an ethnic or racial minority are often sidelined, technically part of the board but to whom the other directors or trustees don\u2019t really listen.<\/p>\n<p>Byron and research colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.villanova.edu\/university\/president\/presidents-report\/2021-2022\/corrinne-post-phd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corinne Post<\/a> of Villanova published <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/10.5465\/amj.2013.0319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article on this topic in <em>Academy of Management Journal<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s this idea that you just add women and stir and that\u2019s enough, but that\u2019s not enough,\u201d Byron said. \u201cIf we\u2019re saying that the ways in which a woman might add value is that she might have different perspectives or a different lens through which to look at an issue, or she might have information or knowledge or experience that maybe some of her male colleagues don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat knowledge, experience, and perspectives mean nothing\u2014they\u2019re not going to have any effect\u2014if people aren\u2019t willing to acknowledge the usefulness of that perspective or knowledge or experience,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s probably lots of other things that are important to whether or not the woman on the board is a token, or whether or not there\u2019s some kind of critical mass of female directors on the board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo people think, \u2018Oh, she\u2019s just there on the board because we had to fill this quota\u2014she wasn\u2019t the best person to serve in this role; she\u2019s just here for window dressing to make us look good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diversity is hollow if it isn\u2019t accompanied by equity, inclusion, and fostering a sense of belonging among members of marginalized and minority groups. Actually listening to female board members\u2019 ideas and suggestions and enacting the best of them are crucial for them to have a chance to improve an organization\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has to be this real belief among the other board directors that these women, that all of the directors, have some value-add, and that isn\u2019t a given,\u201d Byron said. \u201cSo that\u2019s what it means that you can\u2019t just add women and stir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has to be some other things that are in place in order for women to have a positive impact on an organization, especially on something that\u2019s so distal or downstream like firm performance,\u201d she said. \u201cBoard directors largely have an indirect effect on organizational performance.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daniel Butcher Even at organizations that have made strides in adding women and people of color to their governing boards, tokenism is all too common.
