{"id":7053,"date":"2025-07-08T21:33:58","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T21:33:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aomtodayprod.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=7053"},"modified":"2025-07-09T15:33:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T15:33:17","slug":"why-now-is-the-time-to-double-down-on-dei","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/why-now-is-the-time-to-double-down-on-dei\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Now Is the Time to Double Down on DEI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/jason-collins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason Collins<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many U.S. organizations find themselves at a crossroads as public skepticism and outright political attacks challenge their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Even after U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive orders designed to eradicate DEI programs in the public and private sectors, Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/carol-kulik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carol Kulik<\/a> of the University of South Australia said that organizations should not retreat from their DEI efforts but rather lean into them. After Target abandoned its DEI programs earlier this year, it came under heavy criticism and has suffered from an ongoing boycott.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it&#8217;s hard in the face of social and political pressure, but this is the worst time for organizations to abandon their diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts,\u201d Kulik said. \u201cIn general, DEI efforts are at the point where they\u2019re just starting to get momentum and traction, and we\u2019re starting to be able to document the impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now what we\u2019re seeing is a disruption in that process and potentially a backslide,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>This public challenge to DEI gives organizations an opportunity to demonstrate the sincerity and authenticity of their DEI efforts and commitment to all their stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we have any kind of regulatory or social pressure on organizations to support diversity, sustainability, or any kind of social movement, it\u2019s very hard for people to distinguish the organizations that are doing those things because they \u2018want to\u2019 versus the organizations that are doing it because they \u2018have to\u2019,\u201d Kulik said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly the time when organizations should double down, because they have an opportunity to leapfrog ahead of the competition and demonstrate that they are staying on course and that their commitment was and still is authentic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganizations that maintain or ramp up their DEI efforts will have an edge in the market.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jason Collins Many U.S. organizations find themselves at a crossroads as public skepticism and outright political attacks challenge their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
