{"id":7581,"date":"2026-03-26T10:21:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T10:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aomtodayprod.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=7581"},"modified":"2026-03-26T14:22:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T14:22:28","slug":"why-accepting-different-political-beliefs-at-work-is-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/why-accepting-different-political-beliefs-at-work-is-best\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Accepting Different Political Beliefs at Work Is Best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/jason-collins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason Collins<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many companies struggle to create a workspace where employees feel accepted regardless of their political or ideological beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/sekou-bermiss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sekou Bermiss<\/a> of the University of North Carolina\u2019s Kenan-Flagler Business School studies how organizational dynamics relate to political ideology, including how comfortable people are about expressing their political beliefs at work\u2014and how bosses and colleagues react when they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour ideology is about how you think, your ideas about policy and ideals about economics and politics\u2014what is the right way for the world to exist\u2014and that\u2019s a very deeply held belief,\u201d Bermiss said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s polarized political landscape, it\u2019s understandable that organizations will have people in it that see the world differently, and so part of having an org where conservatives and liberals both feel accepted is communicating to staff that different viewpoints are welcomed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a culture of ideological inclusivity, there will be differences of opinion. In his research, Bermiss said that one reaction stood out as surprisingly common and hurtful: ridicule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone states something, and they\u2019re not yelled at, they\u2019re not fired\u2014they\u2019re laughed at,\u201d he said, which can affect the person\u2019s morale and motivation in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of ridiculing an opinion different from theirs, Bermiss urges organizations\u2019 leaders and managers to think to themselves, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I agree with your perspective, but I hear what you\u2019re trying to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He suggested thinking before speaking: \u201cMaybe we have other employees who agree with you, customers who agree with you, and suppliers who agree with you, so let me consider that in my decisions around whatever the choice might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bermiss said that one of the key things organizations\u2019 leaders and managers need to think about is \u201cbeing accepting and that inclusivity is really pertinent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople want more inclusivity from their employer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jason Collins Many companies struggle to create a workspace where employees feel accepted regardless of their political or ideological beliefs.
