The new year seems likely to bring more political, economic, and social turbulence,\u201d Byron said.<\/p>\n<p>So what can we be certain about as the new year approaches?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can be certain that there will be a lot of uncertainty,\u201d Byron said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s better to approach uncertainty with others by our side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind ways to connect with others: Reach out to a friend\u2014or better yet, make a new friend,\u201d she said. \u201cLet people see who you are and what you are like and strike up a conversation by asking something about others\u2014ask about their pet, their hobbies, or their family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMutual self-disclosure not only strengthens and deepens relationships, it allows us to survive and even thrive during difficult times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Impromptu <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/10.5465\/amj.2022.0683.summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glimpses into coworkers\u2019 lives<\/a>\u2014such as a cat bounding or a child sneaking into a Zoom call\u2014can trigger bonds between colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, people <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/10.5465\/amj.2012.0932.summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decorate their offices<\/a> as a way to convey who they are to others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an ice breaker that helps form connections, and interactions go more easily when people have a sense of who they are working with,\u201d Byron said.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever ice breakers and conversation starters you use, make a resolution to form new relationships and strengthen old ones, both inside and outside of the office, in the coming year, she suggested.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daniel Butcher Studies demonstrate the importance of relationships at work and out of work, and yet people often miss the mark on finding ways to build them, according to Academy of Management Scholar Kris Byron of Georgia State University. \u201cBrace yourself for 2026!
