{"id":9005,"date":"2026-07-23T09:34:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T09:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/?p=9005"},"modified":"2026-07-17T15:37:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:37:10","slug":"culture-is-still-king-in-the-ai-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/culture-is-still-king-in-the-ai-era\/","title":{"rendered":"Culture Is Still King in the AI Era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/author\/paul-friedman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Friedman<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At a time when the impact of artificial intelligence is so high on the business community\u2019s lists of hopes and fears, a company\u2019s culture is as important as ever. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">According to Academy of Management Scholars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/jennifer-chatman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Chatman<\/a> of the University of California, Berkeley, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/glenn-carroll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glenn Carroll<\/a> of Stanford University, the authors of the 2026 book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/making-organizational-culture-great\/9780231565271\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Making Organizational Culture Great: Moving Beyond Popular Beliefs<\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">,<\/span><u> <\/u><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">AI can be used to help shape the kind of strong culture needed to successfully execute a company\u2019s strategy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Chatman said that AI may not be the biggest challenge to the way a company\u2019s culture\u2014its values, norms, attitudes, practices, and beliefs that shape how an organization operates\u2014emerge through its employees\u2019 interactions with each other. The COVID-19 pandemic caused an even greater disruption, at least so far.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The question around remote work was harder to answer because culture started to ebb as people interacted less,\u201d Chatman said. \u201cOne of the short-term effects that AI will have is to reduce the headcount in organizations, but the bodies still standing will tell AI what matters and define what criteria should be used to make decisions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That\u2019s going to require people to interact, and that means culture will still be relevant,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>AI\u2019s role in cultural development<\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A friend of mine at Google, who really thinks about these things, says he actually believes AI might facilitate cultural development,\u201d Carroll added. \u201cFor example, he says in a big organization you might spend a lot of time right now trying to find the people you need for a team or who think alike about the company\u2019s values and strategy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">With AI, you can identify those people much more quickly and put them together,\u201d he said. \u201cThat will help people build the culture rather than undermine it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Carroll said that he\u2019s not a prognosticator about the AI-transformed future of work, but he doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s just another business fad like many others he\u2019s seen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">One wonders whether this is another case of \u2018This too shall pass,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Paul Friedman At a time when the impact of artificial intelligence is so high on the business community\u2019s lists of hopes and fears, a company\u2019s culture is as important as ever.
