It\u2019s something they do better than competitors that matters to customers and other stakeholders. That distinction is critical, according to Academy of Management Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aom.org\/today\/thomas-hutzschenreuter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Hutzschenreuter<\/a> of the Technical University of Munich, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murmann-verlag.de\/products\/thomas-hutzschenreuter-sharper-charting-your-course-with-seven-strategy-principles?srsltid=AfmBOopjhnonjIQVrvIaZyez-PCwabf7YXqZQMiK_KrRsUHzLLlZNFvX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sharper! Charting Your Course with Seven Strategy Principles.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies frequently mistake technical superiority for competitive advantage,\u201d Hutzschenreuter said. \u201cIf customers do not value the difference, the advantage is largely irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaders should therefore ask two questions: Where are we genuinely superior? And where does that superiority influence customer decisions?\u201d he said. \u201cOnce identified, advantages must be protected and renewed\u2014every advantage has a lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompetitors imitate, technologies evolve, and customer preferences change,\u201d he said. \u201cThe most successful organizations treat competitive advantage not as an asset to preserve but as a capability to continuously recreate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompetitive advantage is not what you do better\u2014it is what you do better thatcustomers actually value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaizen: Japanese for \u201cchange for the better\u201d or \u201ccontinuous improvement\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Japanese philosophy kaizen reflects the idea that excellence is achieved through accumulation rather than breakthrough alone. Hutzschenreuter said that Toyota institutionalized continuous improvement by making it part of all personnel\u2019s everyday work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImprovement was not limited to executives or consultants\u2014it became everyone\u2019s responsibility,\u201d Hutzschenreuter said. \u201cOver time, countless small improvements created extraordinary organizational capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strategic lesson is powerful: Competitive advantage rarely emerges from one dramatic innovation,\u201d he said. \u201cMore often, it is built through thousands of small refinements that compound over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaders should therefore view processes not as fixed routines but as evolving systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuous improvement is not merely an operational philosophy\u2014it is a strategic capability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompetitive advantage is often the result of thousands of small improvements rather than one big breakthrough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overlooked strategy components and internal fit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most overlooked aspect of strategy is coherence, Hutzschenreuter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany organizations evaluate strategic initiatives individually but fail to examine how they interact as a system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, they create contradictions: pursuing cost leadership while investing heavily in customization, seeking innovation while rewarding risk avoidance, or promoting collaboration while incentivizing internal competition. These inconsistencies undermine performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strongest strategies exhibit internal fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoals, scope, competitive advantages, organizational structures, incentives, and daily behaviors reinforce one another,\u201d Hutzschenreuter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen that alignment exists, strategy gains leverage. When it does not, organizations expend enormous effort while achieving surprisingly little.
