2026 Call for Professional Development Workshop (PDW) Proposals

Division PDW Chair: Daan Westra, Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI), Maastricht University, Netherlands

The Health Care Management Division (HCM) invites you to submit creative and innovative proposals for Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) for the 86th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM 2026) to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 31 July to 4 August 2026. The PDW portion of the program will take place Friday, 31 July through Sunday, 2 August 2026.

We seek proposals from those who wish to organize a PDW session for either the Emerging Scholars Consortium (ESC) that is focused on junior members and early career scholars or the traditional PDW Program that is open to all AOM members. Please note that you must be an AOM member, register for the conference, and be present in Philadelphia to participate in PDWs.

At the ESC, experienced faculty interact with doctoral students and junior faculty. The ESC is the optimal place for offering mentorship to doctoral students and early career scholars interested in health care management.  For many members, it is their first exposure to our amazing HCM community and a natural place to make a real difference.  Sessions in the ESC often provide guidance on publishing, career options, strategies for meeting professional and life goals, and networking opportunities.

Traditional PDW sessions should have a broader appeal to conference attendees at various stages in their careers. The goal of these workshops is to give attendees the opportunity to make new personal and intellectual connections that can enhance their research, education, and practice. Examples of past PDW topics include theory building in health care management, hot topics in health care management, innovative research methods, exploring new teaching methods, writing for mainstream audiences, moving through career stages successfully, grant writing, increasing the international focus of your research, effective publishing strategies, mentoring, and many more.

We welcome new PDW session ideas and encores of successful sessions from years past. Junior faculty and PhD students are especially welcome to propose innovative ideas for PDWs. Additionally, we encourage sessions that embrace and leverage our gathering in Philadelphia.

PDWs that will be selected for the program will address target participants’ learning needs and have an interactive, participant-centered format. Experiential learning and participant interaction should be part of the PDW design. Clear and feasible logistical plans and firm commitments from all presenters are necessary proposal components. PDWs are a minimum of 1 hour in length and a maximum of 4 hours.

Individuals interested in organizing a PDW session during either the ESC or the traditional PDW program are encouraged to contact HCMD PDW Chair Daan Westra no later than 7 December 2025 to share their ideas. The submission deadline via the AOM Submission Center is Tuesday, 13 January 2026 at 17:00 ET (UTC-5/GMT-5).
