Governance and Leadership

AOM Governance

The Academy of Management is a member-driven association governed by a volunteer Board of Governors (the Board). In addition, 24 Divisions and 2 Interest Groups, governed by their own elected officers, carry out much of the association’s work. The President of AOM appoints committees and task forces to handle new business, undertake projects, and manage specific services such as career services, membership, and the historical archives. Committees, Task Forces, Journal Editors, and the Divisions and Interest Groups (DIGs) maintain connections to the Board of Governors.

Governance-at-a-Glance

The Academy of Management’s governance ensures transparency, accountability, and member engagement at every level. From the Board of Governors to committees, policies, and annual reports, these resources highlight how AOM’s leaders are elected, how decisions are made, and how members can get involved. How AOM is Governed

The primary governing body of the Academy of Management (AOM) is our volunteer Board of Governors, which includes a succession of leadership for the following roles:

  • Vice President‑Elect/Program Chair‑Elect
  • Vice President/Program Chair
  • President
  • President-Elect
  • Past President
  • 10 elected Representatives‑at‑Large

The Executive Director serves as Secretary-Treasurer and is an ex officio member of the Board.

The board is charged with legal and fiduciary accountability for setting strategic direction and policy for AOM.

Learn more about AOM’s Impact

The Academy of Management’s work extends far beyond research and scholarship. Our governance, programs, and global membership community generate measurable impact in the real world. From advancing management knowledge to shaping the practices that influence organizations, economies, and societies, AOM plays a pivotal role in connecting ideas and with action by building and sharing a sound scientific foundation.

Each year, we highlight these achievements, along with audited financials and strategic outcomes, in our Annual Report (member-only access).

Become Involved

AOM’s governance is built on the active participation of its members. By nominating a colleague for a leadership role or volunteering to serve on a committee or task force, members contribute directly to shaping the future of AOM. These opportunities not only strengthen AOM’s capacity to serve our global community, they also allow members to expand their professional networks, develop leadership skills, and engage in meaningful service that advances management scholarship and practice.
