Learn with AOM: Expanding access to Research Methods Education
AOM is introducing Learn with AOM: Methods Training Series, powered by CARMA, a new online learning opportunity designed to support doctoral students and early-career scholars with accessible, practice-oriented introductions to topics that are foundational for current research methods and data analysis techniques. As part of AOM’s Vision 2030 initiative, the AOM Board of Governors Methods Committee has led the development of the strategic framework guiding this initiative.
Announcing Learn with AOM: Methods Training Series
The series brings together AOM’s scholarly community and the Consortium for the Advancement of Research Methods & Analysis (CARMA)’s expertise in research methods education to create a learning opportunity that can support scholars at different points in their research journeys.
I’ve been part of the CARMA community since the first year of my PhD program, and it’s been an invaluable resource throughout my training, from the webcast lectures and online resources to the short courses offered twice a year. As someone whose home institution houses CARMA, I’ve seen firsthand how much value it brings to doctoral students working to build their methods foundation. These new guided mini-courses in partnership with AOM are a fantastic opportunity for AOM members at any career stage to sharpen their skills in current methods and analysis, and a great low-barrier way for affiliate members to experience what CARMA has to offer.

Two Course Tracks to Fit Your Needs
Learn with AOM: Methods Training Series is being offered as a pilot program for AOM members. Participant feedback will help inform future research methods education opportunities that AOM is developing.
Concepts & Tools for Research Methods — October 2026
This introductory track will provide a focused opportunity to explore foundational and emerging topics in research methods. The series will feature 3-hour tutorial sessions held across four days in October, that can be taken individually or as a group. Each of the four tutorials includes a lecture session introducing key concepts followed by a lab session introducing use of key statistical software and related tools. Topics will include:
- Data structures and statistical models
- Qualitative data coding
- Programming languages
- Machine learning
Live Sessions: October 6, 8, 12, and 14, 2026
Times: 9:00am-noon ET and 13:00-16:00 ET
Recordings will be available through the Learn with AOM: Methods Training Series library, providing an opportunity to engage with a rich variety of content beyond the live sessions.
Advanced Topic Workshop Track — November 2026–February 2027
This series of eight, 90-minute synchronous learning sessions is also offered for users to experience individually or as a set. Their goal is to build on the Concepts and Tools series, and provide a deeper methodological treatment of current research methods and data analysis techniques. Workshops will include lectures, panel discussions, and hands-on experiential components. The techniques covered are both quantitative and qualitative and are used by both micro and macro management researchers.
Topics of the eight workshops include:
- Panel analysis
- Multilevel analysis
- Content analysis
- Grounded theory
- Mixed methods
- Computational modeling
- Large language models (LLMs)
- Natural language processing (NLP)
As with the introductory series, content delivery is provided in a hybrid format, with new live content and related recordings as well as existing recorded content curated from CARMA’s extensive video library. The educational experience is supported by optional readings, assessments of learning, and use of discussion boards to reinforce course objectives.
